Have you ever been outside at night, sitting on the porch, enjoying the fresh air only to be interrupted by the flight of the night butterfly, otherwise known as the moth? That is annoying enough. When it becomes a real issue is when these flying nuisances find their way into your home. They are notorious for eating your clothes, destroying furniture, and being overall pests. However, there are several things you can do to lessen or even eradicate the problem. Below are three of those ways.
Set Traps
Since moths spend the majority of their time in flight, one of the easiest ways to get rid of moths is to set out traps. There are pheromone traps you can buy and set out for moths. They work by attracting the moth to the paper and then trapping it when one of its wings touches the surface. It works very much like a glue trap for mice or fly traps. You can also make your own by taking fly paper and dabbing some fish oil on it. You can set these up in your closet or pantry and make an immediate dent in the problem.
Take Care of Your Clothes
One of the best ways to take care of any problem, including a moth infestation, is to prevent it from happening in the first place. Moths are highly attracted to your clothing, especially anything made from an animal, such as wool sweaters from sheep. Make sure to wash your clothing regularly. This keeps down the incidence of moth eggs that they like to lay in the inner working of material such as wool.
Also, brush your wool, fur, and feathered clothing after each wear. This will also reduce the number of eggs carried into your home as moths like to settle on you and lay them when you are out and about. Store your clothing in plastic or well ventilated areas. Lastly, make sure to keep your closet clean. Wiping it down with a vinegar solution will help keep any moth from making your home theirs.
Chemical Solutions
Another way to get rid of this pesky vermin is to go on the offensive and just kill and remove them. There are several chemical solutions to this problem. Again, you can buy the pheromone traps or spray moth killer to immediately handle small problems or you could purchase kits that handle much larger infestations. There are also kits that offer repellents that will give you months of protection from moths. There are sprays and good old fashioned moth balls included, here.
In the end, moths can be just as annoying as roaches, ants or mice. Refer often to these tips on how to handle the issue and you can rest confidently that your wool sweater will be waiting on you, hole free, when winter comes around again.
