By now, with the help of the internet, you are probably well versed in the different kinds of implants available and can even talk about the benefits of implants over other restorative procedures. Of course, these are all part and parcel of the research!

However, do you know what the actual fitting entails?

Like most things in life, when you choose to have dental Implants in Melbourne, it is wise to have some idea about how they will be fitted. This can allow you to mentally prepare for the procedure, which is very helpful if you are a bit more nervous in the dental chair.

What can you expect when you have dental implants in Melbourne? What does the process actually involve? Read on to find out!

Initial consultation

When you decide you want dental implants in Melbourne, you will be invited to an initial consultation.

At this meeting, your chosen dental team will discuss with you what you hope to obtain by having implants fitted, such as how you want to look when the treatment is completed. During this consultation, your dentists will take an X-Ray of your mouth, to assess if your jaw is suitable for implants, by examining the thickness and any potential damage that is present in your jaw bone.

They will also discuss with you the type of implant they may use and, if more than a single tooth needs replacing, they will talk to you about how many implants they intend to use.

This is also a great time to ask any questions you may have and will allow your dental team to break down the next few stages to you in person.

The fitting

The big day!

During this session, your dentist will numb the area where the implant is to be placed.

Gently peeling back the gum, they will drill a small hole into your jaw and fit the implant(s) in place. Depending on how many implants you are having fitted, this process may take several hours and may be spread over 2 sessions.

Once in place, they will sew your gums together using dissolvable stitches and will often fit a temporary crown to enable chewing of food.

Prosthetics

Depending on the type of implant you have had, the dental team will need to check if it is attaching to your jaw bone correctly. This process can take between 3 – 6 months and will require additional X-Rays.

Once secure, they will place the prosthetics (teeth) onto the implants, which may take up to an hour to complete. When your team is happy that they are in place, you can go! Enjoy your new teeth!

Aftercare

Aftercare is relatively simple; brush and floss twice a day, gargle with mouthwash and avoid excess alcohol consumption or smoking.

Attend check-ups with our team twice a year, and your new set of teeth will be with you for a long time!
