Explore a New World in North Pennines

The landscape of North England is perfect for cyclists and walkers. Escape the noise and overwhelm of the cities and tread through the beautiful and flawless natural landscape of the North Pennies. It was titled ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’ in 1988 and has remained one of the most popular places for a serene, calming tour since then. If health, wellbeing, and peace of mind are your top priorities, this is one place you should not miss.

Why visit the beautiful North Pennies?

Life on a scenic vacation doesn’t have to be dull. Visit the North Pennies to find the most stunning views in England. There is never a boring moment when you are hiking or cycling through this region. The entirety of this area is breathtakingly beautiful and spectacular views are scattered around its geography. Coming here is easy but deciding which spot to relax in is very difficult. After all, they are all so magnificent that one trip will never be enough to enjoy them all.

Grab your mountain bike and move through the scenic yet challenging North Pennies. Follow the meadows, the woodlands, the upland rivers and the peatlands and glide through the heather moors and dales to find hidden spots that could make your trip worthwhile. For hikers, the place presents an even more mind-blowing view. You get to experience the area up close and personal.

With the help of Leisure Lakes, we will help you make an itinerary of your tour of the amazing North Pennies. Ready?

Where to begin your journey?

If you like cycling, make sure you start your North Pennies journey at the Wear & Rockhope Valleys. Keep pedaling and move through the amazing Lintzgarth Arch and the Burnhope Reservoir to find the most scenic views that this region has to offer. The entire trail is beautiful and provides stunning views. You could even spend your night here.

There are many wonderful hotels in the Durham Dales Centre located in Stanhope. Come here and grab a warm drink, meet fellow cyclists and start your journey together. Before going back home, don’t forget to pick souvenirs from the gift and craft shops here.

Get ready to move

Say goodbye to the Durham Dales Centre and now move to the Stanhope Town Hall, following the A689. Feeling hungry? Rest for a while and relish a meal at Stanhope Fish and Chips. Not quite ready for the food? Don’t worry. You will anyway come back from the same route.

Then just glide along the way and pass a scenic bridge. You will have to move further in the same direction. Stay aware of the right turns. You have to take the third right from the bridge and then follow the road upwards. Here, you will see the Greenhead Farm and the Greenfoot Hotel. Your next destination is Rockhope.

This is the perfect place for a stopover. Have a drink or a small meal at the Rockhope Inn and once you feel ready, get ready to move again.

Now, you are well-rested and hopefully full too. The rest of the journey is equally scenic. From here, you can move to Saint John’s Church. You will also reach the town center shortly. Keep moving forward and then take the second left. Your next destination is Allenheads. Before reaching here, you will have to move along the main road, channeling the Rockhope Burn River. Both cyclists and hikers like to stop over at the Allenheads Inn.

The road from here is equally beautiful. Move to the B6295 road, and you will reach Cowshill. Cyclists usually prefer to stop over at the Cowshill Hotel. They like to entertain cyclists and hikers too. So, if you need a break, you could stay here as well. After this, move on to the A689 road. This road will take you directly to Ireshopeburn.

You have entered the last lap of your journey. Keep moving ahead, and you will pass the St. John’s Chapel. Next up will be the Daddry Shield. You have to keep moving along the Pleasant Road. If you want to have a drink or a coffee, you will love the pubs and cafes along this route. The Blue Bell Inn, The Golden Lion and the Chatterbox Café are all located at this place.

The road will come to an end as you move along and reach Brotherlee. You will then go to Horsley Hall- a beautiful country hotel in this region. The River Wear will welcome you on an even scenic bridge. Move along and take a right. You will come to the B6278. The road will take you straight to Stanhope. Here, go back to the Durham Dales Centre and relax! You have just enjoyed all that the North Pennies had to offer.

Duration of the tour

Though it may sound like a long journey, it actually is only 24.36 miles. If you are traveling at 13 mph, you could complete the entire journey in only 1 hour and 52 minutes. If you like to enjoy the scenic views a little more while moving slowly through these areas, simply move at 10 mph. You will complete this journey in 2 hours and 26 minutes only.

If you like to pedal quickly and challenge yourself, then a speed of 19 mph will let you complete the journey in 1 hour and 16 minutes only. Want to move even faster? Go at 22 mph, and you will complete it within 1 hour and 6 minutes only.

Challenging routes

Some cyclists may find the hills challenging, especially if they are beginners. If the weather is not pleasant, the hills could present some mild difficulties as well. However, in general, they are very friendly routes.

You should be aware of the route before starting your journey. Here are some points in the cycling route that could be challenging to some cyclists.

  • The Brandon Walls and Hill Top is a 2-mile-long journey and it is situated at the height of 1570 ft.
  • The Rookhope Head is a 0.75-mile-long journey and is situated at 1745 ft height.
  • The Burtree Fell is a 1.8-mile-long journey and is situated at the height of 1836 ft.

These were some challenging parts of the trip but if you if the weather is nice and you are pumped up, overcoming them will be a breeze.
