The new year always has people making resolutions and planning to do things different this year than they did the last. Some people plan for better relationships, some people plan for better jobs, and other people make it a vow to do something healthy in their lives, like eat better or exercise more.
Getting healthy in the new year is probably one of the most popular resolutions people make. Maybe you resolve to go to the gym every day or maybe you resolve to quit eating out so much. Whatever your plan is, getting healthy is always a great idea, but you want to do it in a way that allows you to stick with it.
Watch What You’re Drinking
One quick way to start getting healthier is to start being more aware of the things you are drinking. You don’t have to cut out the things you love, but if they are bad for you then you should at least cut down on how much of them you are drinking.
Not only is alcohol addictive, but most alcoholic drinks will add a good deal of calories to your daily intake, and mixed drinks add a lot of sugar. If you find it hard to cut down or quit, you may want to seek help. You may also want to nix the soda you’re drinking, which is wasted calories and bad for your teeth, and start drinking more water.
Watch What You’re Eating
One great beginning place for getting healthier is in your diet. If you already eat healthy you can still make some changes, like trying new fruits and vegetables that you’ve never had before or haven’t had in awhile. You could even try some new healthy recipes, and start going meat free a couple times a week.
If you don’t eat healthy you don’t have to stop cold turkey. However, you should start eating out only once or twice a month, swap snacks every once in awhile for the more healthy options, and work at cutting back to proper portion sizes.
Start Moving
The first part of this step in a healthier new year is to start getting more physical fitness. This isn’t hard to do, and if you just double your steps every day you’ll be making great strides. Walk more when you can, and take any opportunity to workout.
Another way to get moving is to do some work around your home. Even cleaning and decluttering helps burn calories, and you’ll be giving yourself a better living atmosphere too. Clutter can be both stressful and distracting! Even on days you don’t feel like exercising, you can vacuum your home, do the laundry, or get outside and mow the lawn or weed the garden.
